Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is about more than calming nerves; it helps patients receive the care they need without added stress. Some of the main advantages include:

  • A Calmer Experience

Sedation reduces fear and worry, making visits feel less overwhelming.

  • Greater Comfort

Long or complex treatments can be performed with minimal discomfort.

  • Fewer Appointments

Because patients are more relaxed, dentists can often complete multiple procedures in one sitting.

  • Easier for Sensitive Patients

Those with a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still often do better with sedation.

  • Encourages Regular Care

Patients who once avoided dental visits often feel more confident returning when sedation is an option.

Who May Benefit from Sedation

Not everyone requires sedation, but it can be a helpful option for patients who:

Struggle with dental anxiety or phobias.

  • Have trouble becoming numb with local anesthetic alone.

  • Need significant dental work or surgical procedures.

  • Find it difficult to remain in the chair for extended periods.

  • Have special needs that make traditional dentistry more challenging.

Your dentist will carefully evaluate your health history and discuss which type of sedation—nitrous oxide or IV sedation—is safe and appropriate for your situation.

Nitrous & IV Sedation

Dental sedation via laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is one of the most common, effective, and safe procedures for alleviating anxiety associated with dental visits. Dr. Sameer Dogra is certified and licensed to offer sedation for patients who are extraordinarily fearful or anxious about dental procedures.

During your appointment for dental sedation at our Exeter, NH dental office, you can expect the following:

  • Before your Appointment

If Dr. Dogra recommends sedation as part of your treatment plan, taking a dose of anti-anxiety medication may be necessary before your scheduled dental appointment. When you arrive at our office, you will already feel calmed and relaxed. Sedation patients will need a companion to take them to and from their appointment. Patients seeking nitrous oxide sedation will not necessarily need to take medication at home before their visit.

  • Sedation During your Visit

An additional dose of sedative medication may be administered once you arrive in office, depending on your level of anxiety and the duration of your scheduled procedure. When utilizing nitrous oxide, a small mask will be placed over your mouth and nose, which will administer the sedative. Effects take place quickly, promoting feelings of relaxation and comfort.

  • Post-Treatment Recovery

Nitrous oxide can be reversed after your treatment is complete with the inhalation of pure oxygen. Patients using sedation will need their companion to transport them home, where the effects of the medication will taper off over the course of the following few hours.

Methods of sedation produce feelings of calm and comfort, so you can visit our office without feeling the anxiety that may have kept you away in the first place. While sedated, you will have little to no memory of your visit. Sights and sounds that may have previously triggered an anxious response will produce the same response.

"I had not been to the dentist in over 10 years and I was petrified! A bad toothache finally made me pick up the phone and get help. I am so glad I found Dental Arts of Exeter!! Dr. Sam and his staff were so kind and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Dr. Sam used sedation for my treatment and I could not have imagined how easy it all was! I have very little memory of my actual treatment and virtually no pain afterward. For someone who has had an extreme dental fear since childhood, my new-found appreciation for the dentist is nothing short of a miracle! A huge thank you to Dr. Sam and everyone at Dental Arts of Exeter. You (literally) have me smiling!"

Anxiety-Free Dentistry with Sedation

Severe dental anxiety keeps many patients away from the dental chair for years and gives small oral health problems the chance to escalate into serious issues that require extensive treatment. Sedation dentistry makes it possible to experience worry-free and relaxing dental care, so you don’t have to avoid visiting the dentist again. For longer procedures, sedation shortens the perceived length of time spent in our office. Longer visits appear to pass in the blink of an eye and are much more comfortable than you thought possible. During these longer appointments, as much treatment as needed can be completed in one visit, reducing the number of repeat visits needed to complete your treatment plan.
